Congratulations to Marilyn Motsch

When the club newsletter recognizes an award-winning club member, it’s usually for a racing-related activity. This time, however, it’s a graphic design award winner that I want to tell you about.

The annual design competition of the Louisville Graphic Design Association awarded a prize to Marilyn Motsch, who designed the jerseys for the 2000 and 2001 Old Kentucky Home Tours. The panel of national judges announced the winners at an award ceremony held in December 2001 at the Speed Museum, an appropriate venue when you remember that graphic design is one of the oldest art forms.

Designers from throughout the region entered the competition. Most are associated with design firms, which made Marilyn especially proud of her win. “I’m just a one-woman shop, and to win against all these larger companies was great.”

Marilyn submitted five entries, one of which was the 2001 OKHT jersey. “I felt it was a strong work. And it was a unique entry.” This is the most prestigious award that Marilyn has received for her work on cycling jerseys and the second one for an OKHT jersey. Her 2000 OKHT jersey was voted by the League of American Bicyclists as the best jersey in the 2000 Best Biking in America series.

The 2001 jersey expanded on and refined the theme of the bicycle-riding harlequin musician that Marilyn created for the 2000 ride. It depicts the harlequin and his female companion on the bicycle, surrounded by musical notes.

One of the jerseys is featured with the other award winners in a display of the designs at the Main branch of the Louisville Free Public Library at 5th and York Streets. Of course, the best view of the jersey is from your bike as you encounter some of the more than 160 cyclists who wear it.
