LAB Rally Volunteers Needed

In the last newsletter, Earl introduced the wonderful news that the League of American Bicyclists (LAB) is holding one of their three 1999 Rallies right here in Louisville from June 4th to 7th. This Rally will involve sagged bike rides each day, daily seminars and other special events. It is projected to draw over 1000 riders for the four-day event, and will provide Louisville and especially our club with national exposure.

With such a big production coming to town, you can imagine that the LAB has requested a lot of local support for designing ride routes, developing seminars and providing general contact information for a variety of services that will cater to all these visitors. For the past five months, several of the club members have been very busy in supporting the LAB with all aspects of planning and organizing these events. But, now we need lots of additional help in this last push before all the visitors arrive and the events get started. We need volunteers to help:

Mark the routes that have been developed
Act as roving sags and to manage water stops
Rally registration
Ride captain shorter “specialty” rides, e.g. to Churchill Downs or Locust Grove

If you can help out, no matter how small the effort or amount of time you can provide, please contact Jim McDonald (244-0931), Earl Jones (895-4850), or Jim Tretter (491-7120). Earl has promised a special party for all those who help!!

LAB Workshops

There will be a number of workshops provided during the League Rally at the Galt House. You may find our more information and times by a visit to this website.

American Specialty Insurance – Protecting your club, its officers and members against lawsuits in a litigious society
Glenn Todd – Effective Cycling as a membership development tool
Cheryl Brawner – Bike fit
Anne Hunttington – Racing programs
Barbara Berman – Cycling for Women
Troy Grubb – Avoiding cycling injuries
Tom Armstrong – Recumbents
Joe Ward – Louisville in League history
Tom Owen – Louisville’s neighborhoods (Joe Ward will try to recruit Tom)
Jim Holmberg – From the Falls of the Ohio to the Pacific, Lewis and Clark’s Voyage of Discovery (Jim Holmberg is the historian at the Filson Club.)
