Educationby Steve Sarson, VP Education
New Education Program The club has received a number of comments from new cyclists and riders from the Monday bike-handling classes who would like to begin to ride some club rides, but need a slightly slower pace and a little guidance. During the last touring meeting, we discussed the possibility of having more experienced cyclists volunteer to mentor a new rider on a one-on-one basis. Riding at a slower pace and sharing riding tips and techniques learned over the years would encourage new riders to continue to ride with the club and improve their abilities. A new rider would be offered the opportunity to ride with an experienced rider during the announcements. This mentoring would be for a single ride, but a new rider could ask again on a different ride. This new LBC Mentor program would need some of you to volunteer to be mentors, and to make yourselves available to new or inexperienced riders on an as-needed basis. If you are interested in being part of this, please contact me at 499-7089. If we have enough volunteers, we’ll give it a try. Monday Bike Handling Classes The Monday night bike handling classes concluded for the year on August 25th with a fruit ride. We had an average attendance of 40 new riders, ranging in age from 9 to 75. Two people came from Lexington and attended almost every class. They told us there was not a program like this near them, and they really appreciated the opportunity to learn and practice new skills. A number of these attendees have joined the club and have joined us for some club rides. Quite a few have also said they plan on joining us for the OKHT. Special thanks to AB Sandefur, John Samways, Phil Patterson and Dave Wittry for being there to help lead the rides, to Glenn Todd for his presentation on nutrition during the ride, and to Tom Armstrong for his presentation on gearing and shifting. Also, special thanks to Milestone Wellness Center for providing us a place to meet, the use of their pool and sauna after class, and for their continued support of LBC activities, including the OKHT.
