A cold, blustery day greeted the 43 athletes in L'Esprit's beautiful horse country for our second road race of the series. A USCF District Rep. snafu almost caused the race to be cancelled, but all but two of the participants chose to race when one of their own--also an official--stepped forward to officiate the race. The Louisville Bicycle Club/Louisville Wheelmen Racing Team would like to express our thanks to those who came, raced and officiated under these circumstances.
The Cat. 1-3 Senior Men raced 45 miles which ended in a sprint between Eric Fagerberg and Rob Bobrow, with Eric topping the hill first. Bob Jordan was third, Curtis Tolson, fourth, and Kevin Noone, fifth. This was the second week in a row that Rapid Transit Racing Team swept the first five places in this category for the series, and they took the next three placings as well! Stewart Scovill, Sam Schad, Tim Bierne, Kris Stein (Concept) and Mitch Murphy (Strado Velo) finished up the first ten placings, respectively. The Cat. 4-5 Senior Men also chose to do 45 miles, most of which the peleton stayed together. The final hill split the field when teammates John Mahorney and J.T. Everett of Concept Racing made their move as they attacked, surprising--and splintering--the pack. Vic Maddox (Louisville Wheelmen RT) made a valiant attempt to catch after their charge, finishing third. Ed Fichtner (RTRT) was a close fourth, with Mike Smith (Concept), Brad Wright (RTRT), Rob Gregor (LWRT), Mark Zaccone (LWRT), Dan Everhart (Fast Forward CT), Clark McIntosh (LWRT) and Dom Zaccone (Ann Arbor Velo Club) finishing shortly thereafter. In other categories, Senior Women Cat. 4 was won by Denise Lowell (LWRT); and Eric McDonald (LWRT) won the USCF Junior Men. Our sincere thanks goes out to Joe Teipen of Rapid Transit RT (who accepted no payment), who chose to sacrifice his day in order to give the others a chance to race. It's individuals like him that make this sport and its people so extraordinary.
