Advocacy Matters

As part of my initial report to the Club, I want to take this opportunity to thank Cheryl Brawner, our previous VP of Advocacy. The amount of time and effort that Cheryl put into this position leaves a daunting legacy. She leaves very large shoes to fill. Thanks Cheryl.

If you want to be involved in local advocacy efforts, your first chance is February 10, 2003. The Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee holds its regular monthly meeting at TARC headquarters, 1000 W. Broadway. This committee is made up of citizen and public agency members and reviews and comments on governmental efforts (or the lack thereof) to improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians. The primary focus for this year, in terms of cycling, involves bridge access for cyclists. This includes the Second Street Bridge, the Big Four, and any new bridges. The committee is also working to recommend guidelines for any new bicycle lanes or paths. To encourage citizen participation, meetings for odd months are in the evening. If you want up-to-the-minute knowledge of local advocacy issues, come join us. The more the merrier.

Speaking of the more the merrier, let me also urge you to consider membership in the League of American Bicyclists, the premier national cycling advocacy group. In politics, and that is what advocacy really involves, the larger the group you represent, the more your voice is heard. A new bonus included with your LAB membership is a subscription to Bicycling Magazine.
