One can tell it’s spring and summer is not far away. Early morning drivers, intent on the fact it's supposed to be warm and sunny, refuse to scrape their windshields. It will warm up, but it is amusing watching the gyrations required to see through that one tiny open patch in the glass. What a day to be out cycling.
The only real drawback I've personally found for this season is the Lexington Road corridor. The traffic is not really a problem, but the early morning mist is sometimes saturated with some rather pungent odors. Due to prevailing winds from the Stockyard, this makes my commoote a moooving experience. But so far this year, I seem to be moving as fast as traffic on I-64 where it passes through the Cochran Hill tunnel, so there's nothing really to complain about. The perfect commute would have to be a morning departure on Central time, a bonus hour of sunlight for early cycling, and a return trip on Eastern time with daylight until 9:00 p.m. all summer long. Maybe those Central time zone clubs we see at LAB events should consider sunrise rides, since they don't have the luxury of 4 hours of light after work as we do in our prime summer season. Tights are still a good idea until the temp gets above 65°, and lightweight gloves, the cheaper the better, keep fingers toasty warm. I can't tell whether cycle commuting cures spring fever or makes it worse. But, does it really matter?
